Retailer Apprenticeship
The Retailer Apprenticeship Level 2 develops the skills needed to work confidently with customers in shops, supermarkets and specialist retail settings. Apprentices learn to understand what customers are looking for, recommend products and support sales while keeping stock available and displays well presented. They also learn how to handle different customer situations and contribute to a busy retail team.

Funding & Employer Commitment:
As part of the apprenticeship, employers need to ensure the apprentice has sufficient protected time to complete their off-the-job learning. The 20% requirement gives dedicated development time to build the knowledge, skills and behaviours that support effective performance in the workplace. You can find out more about off-the-job training here.
Your role as an employer also includes providing suitable workplace support throughout the Retailer Apprenticeship. Regular guidance, supervision and mentoring will help the apprentice apply their learning to real retail situations and work towards completing their portfolio to the required standard.
If your organisation pays the apprenticeship levy, your levy funds can be used towards eligible apprenticeship training. Non-levy-paying employers could gain access to government funding and incentives. Measures announced for 2026 include full funding for eligible apprentices under 25, and payments of up to £2,000 for employers who recruit apprentices aged 16–24.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. Retailer apprenticeships can be suitable for businesses of different sizes, including independent shops and smaller retail teams. The key consideration is whether you can provide a genuine retail role with opportunities for the apprentice to develop their skills through day-to-day work.
-
Yes. An apprenticeship can provide a structured route into the retail sector for someone with limited or no previous retail experience. They can develop their knowledge and practical abilities while gaining valuable experience as part of your team.
-
This will depend on your business and the apprentice's level of experience, but responsibilities could include serving customers, processing transactions, replenishing stock, maintaining displays, supporting sales and helping with the day-to-day running of your retail environment.
-
Potentially, yes. An existing member of staff may be able to undertake an apprenticeship if they meet the relevant eligibility requirements and the programme provides them with new knowledge and skills. It can be a useful way to formally develop an employee who is taking on broader retail responsibilities.
-
Give them opportunities to learn through real customer and retail situations, alongside clear guidance and regular feedback. Having an experienced member of your team available to answer questions and support their development can help the apprentice build confidence and become increasingly independent.
-
The experience gained can provide a foundation for progression within the retail sector. Depending on their interests and performance, an apprentice could move into roles with greater responsibility, such as senior retail positions, supervisory roles or further management training.
