Funding & Employer Commitment:
Employers need to provide apprentices with 20% of their working time for off-the-job learning. This time is compulsory and allows candidates on a Retail Manager apprenticeship to develop the practical skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to perform confidently and effectively in their role. Find out more about off-the-job training here.
Employers need to provide appropriate guidance, mentoring and workplace support, helping the apprentice to build the knowledge, skills and confidence to complete the final written exam, project and structured meeting with their independent assessor.
Levy-paying businesses can use their apprenticeship levy funds towards training costs. Non-levy employers may also be eligible for government support, including 2026 incentives such as full funding for eligible apprentices under 25 and payments of up to £2,000 for employers taking on apprentices aged 16–24.

-
Yes. Apprenticeships aren't just for large retailers. A smaller business can use the programme to develop someone who is taking on responsibility for areas such as staff, customers, sales, stock and day-to-day operations. The key is having a suitable role where the apprentice can gain meaningful management experience.
