Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship

Level: 3 / Duration: 14-16 mths

Teaching Assistants work in a range of educational settings, including primary, secondary, special schools, alternative provision, and further education institutions. Their main role is to support teachers in enhancing learners’ progress, whether working with individuals or small groups. They help learners understand tasks, stay focused, and meet learning objectives while using strategies tailored to different needs and abilities. Teaching Assistants also often support students with special educational needs, disabilities, or social, emotional, and mental health challenges.

They interact daily with a wide range of learners, including high-attaining, EAL, SEND, and disadvantaged students, and work closely with teachers, school staff, and parents or carers. Their responsibilities include adapting lesson plans under teacher guidance, promoting positive behaviour, applying safeguarding practices, and helping maintain a safe and engaging learning environment, all within the framework of national and school-specific policies.
